FEMALE FORCES: SONJA GATTERWE

I’m particularly excited to tell you about a wonderful person today because frankly, she’s one of my dearest friends. I thought twice about the impression it might give off when writing about friends on here, but how could I not when they create remarkable stuff?

I met Sonja in the very first year of high school, and therefore had the joy of following her journey as a writer for over a decade now. It’s also why I’m so unbelievably proud of the talented person she is today. The way she phrases text is unlike anything I’ve seen before, and it pains me immensely that all the non-German-speakers won’t ever fully get to grasp her genius.

Now living in Leipzig, she’s working her little big heart away — skilfully describing and curating other people’s artworks, as well as painting her own: As Schwester Ottilia, she produces various pieces. [My favourite being her adorably doodled postcards.]

In October 2021, we finally finally finally got to work together on a portrait series of her. Shot on 35mm film.

A few images were featured in artifactums magazine, but I recommend looking for them on gatterwe.de while reading some of Sonja’s work.

ps: love u sun <3
